Haringey Circle Weekly Update: New Activities and Events!

Dear Members,

We’ve had a great week, but there’s another busy few weeks ahead at Haringey Circle, with lots more activities, outings and opportunities to get together. Take a look at what’s coming up below and please tell us what you’ll be joining!

However, as we offer so many more activities and grow our membership, we’d really appreciate your help in keeping things running smoothly by registering when you’re sure you will attend, and letting us know as soon as possible if your plans change. No-shows or unexpected arrivals can be difficult to manage, particularly when other members are waiting for a place. Thank you for your understanding and continued support!

Sunday Wellness & Nature Walk:  Trent Park

We’re welcoming the first weekend of October with a walk through the beautiful woodlands and open spaces of Trent Park.  With autumn settling in, it’s a lovely time to get outdoors, enjoy the changing scenery and spend a few hours walking in good company. We usually have a few different walking paces, so you can find a group that suits you and enjoy the route at your own speed, and as always, we’ll come back together afterwards for a hot drink, a well-earned break and a chance to catch up.

Tai Chi (beginners, intermediate and returners!), EXTENDED!

Last chances don’t miss your chance to come along and give Tai Chi a try. We ask all members to register and select the dates they plan to attend to make sure we are prepared.

To attendees, please note that Heron will be on holiday so no Tai Chi on Mondays 12th or 19th October, but we might be coming up with alternate arrangements!

If you have doubts or interest, read this recent Guardian article highlighting the largest review of its kind into Tai Chi and other traditional exercises. The findings suggest they have huge benefits for both physical and mental health! See full article here: The Guardian: Largest review of its kind confirms benefits of tai chi and other Chinese exercises

NEW Knitting and Crochet Circle!

We continue our crochet,  knitting and textile craft get-together! Join us from 2pm onwards and bring along your mending, knitting, crochet or any other textile project you’re working on. We welcome people of all abilities, whether you’re experienced or just getting started. If you would like to join our WhatsApp group, see here: Knitting, Crochet and Textiles Circle WhatsApp Group

We’ll be meeting at the wonderful Sean’s Shack café at Hornsey Town Hall, a hidden Art Deco gem tucked away just beyond the entrance to the hall, and a lovely spot to spend an afternoon crafting together. For reference, the W7 stops outside, with the 91 and 41 stopping nearby, drop by to check it!

RETURNING Batik Sessions (2/4 weeks)*

We are bringing back our popular Batik sessions for another four-week course! Batik is a beautiful traditional textile art using wax and dyes to create colourful patterns and designs on fabric, a wonderfully creative process to explore, whether or not you consider yourself artistic. This time, priority will be given to members who haven’t had the chance to take part before, but everyone is very welcome to register their interest. Depending on demand, we may even be able to offer additional sessions.

Please note that registration is for all four weeks, so do make sure you can attend the full course before booking your place. Come along, learn the techniques and enjoy creating your own unique textile pieces!

Weekday Walk: Shorter stroll to Woodberry Down

Join us for a relaxed weekday walk as we take a shorter stroll around the lakes at Woodberry Down, enjoying some fresh air, gentle exercise and good company along the way. We’ll keep this walk a little shorter than usual so that we’re back in plenty of time for the Garden Talk happening later at 3pm. As always, you can enjoy the stroll at a pace that feels comfortable for you, with plenty of opportunity to chat along the way.

Garden Talk: Are Herbs More Than A Garnish?*

We’ll soon be heading back to Alexandra Palace Garden Centre to meet Ali for another of our famous Garden Talks. This time, we’ll be asking: Are Herbs More Than a Garnish? Ever tried growing them and failed? Or are there new ones to try perhaps?

From the familiar to the perhaps more surprising, Ali will cover the use of herbs from prehistory to modern times, and their uses as medicine, food and magic, as well as how to grow them in our gardens. Whether you’re a keen gardener or simply curious to learn something new, come along and join the conversation. Registrations to open soon!

RETURNING Drama workshops*

Our Drama workshops are now underway at Haringey Circle, and after a great first week we’re looking forward to the second session! They’re again led by Collage Arts Artistic Director Steve Medlin. Each class explores text-based work alongside devising and creating original work, with a particular focus on helping each participant find their own “voice”. No previous experience is needed,  just an open mind and a willingness to play!

We will continue to welcome new participants, although consistency of attendance is required – so if you’re interested in joining the group, please get in touch with us for more details.

Cinema Club:  Madness: Take It Or Leave It (1981)

Next week at Cinema Club, we’re heading back to late-1970s Camden with Take It or Leave It, the wonderfully nostalgic story of how Madness became one of Britain’s most loved and enduring bands. Originally released in 1981, the film follows seven mates as they come together to form the band, taking us through the jobs they left behind, changing line-ups, disagreements, plenty of laughs and the beginnings of their unmistakable ska-pop “Nutty Sound”. Full of music, humour and Camden nostalgia, it’s a great choice for Madness fans and anyone who fancies a lively trip down memory lane!

Please note that all Cinema Club members are required to present their Cinema Club card on arrival. If you have not yet received your card or wish to join the Cinema Club officially, please contact us in advance so we can arrange this for you. Members wishing to bring friends along are also welcome, just get in touch with us beforehand so we can make the necessary arrangements.

Trent Park House: History Behind the Doors*

We’re happy to confirm our visit to Trent Park House on 13th October at 11am. Join us to see this recently opened first class exhibition. You’ll learn about this historic house, its story, character and connections to the past, and particular its use to imprison top Nazi Military Officers during World War 2, and how it was wired to spy on their conversations!  Circle members can join us for just £7, half the usual £14 ticket price. Places are limited, so early booking is recommended, and we’ll be keeping a waiting list once the visit is fully booked.

Discounted Hip Hop Theatre: Jade and the Beanstalk

We are happy to offer 10% discounted access to Jade and the Beanstalk, a vibrant new professional children’s hip-hop and dance theatre production from Streetz Ahead at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in London. The production follows Jade, whose imagination is her superpower as she navigates neurodivergence and the loss of her mother. Combining hip-hop theatre, storytelling and humour, the production explores grief, loss and hope in an engaging and accessible way for children and young people. To receive the 10% discount, simply register your interest through our form and the discount details will be sent to you to continue with the ticket purchase.

Dining Circle: Late Lunch at Sumak Restaurant!*

Join us for our next Dining Circle as we head to Sumak Restaurant for a late lunch at Sumak. This restaurant specialises in authentic Turkish cuisine, with a varied menu of traditional dishes prepared using quality ingredients and classic recipes. For £15.95, you’ll get a starter, main course and a glass of wine or soft drink, making it a great-value opportunity to try some Turkish favourites and enjoy lunch together.

Note:  Please sign up to join us in good time, before  Mon 12th. Only sign up if you are really coming on the day, and let us know if you have to cancel for unforeseen reasons. Unexpected arrivals by members who haven’t signed up are discouraged and can cause embarrassment.

Olympic Park Guided Tour with Jaki!

If you missed our Olympic Park Tour earlier in the year, here’s another chance to come along and explore this fascinating part of London! Built in Stratford for the 2012 Olympic Games, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is now a huge mixed-use destination filled with striking architecture, sports and arts venues, green spaces and reminders of its Olympic legacy – and it’s even bigger than Hyde Park. Jaki, who volunteered during the Games, will lead us on a stroll through the park, sharing first-hand memories, interesting facts and insights along the way. We’ll meet at Tottenham Hale Station at 11am for the quick hop to Stratford before setting off on the tour, a great opportunity to discover more about a remarkable site right on our doorstep. It’s about an hour’s walk.
