Haringey Circle Weekly Update: New Activities and Events!

Dear members,

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for our Eclipse Picnic, we hope you enjoyed the evening and the experience! If you weren’t able to join us, we hope you managed to see the eclipse safely wherever you were. We hope to see you at some of our upcoming events and activities, including the big trip!

A quick note about registering: please register for events you’re planning to attend, even when they are open to all members. Most activities allow all members to register, but knowing numbers helps us plan properly. For some events, you will receive a confirmation email once your place is confirmed (or reminders if needed!); for others, you won’t receive a confirmation, but we still really want to know that you’re coming! We will make it clear in the event information when you should expect a confirmation.

Sunday Nature & Wellness: New River Walk (and Music in The Grove)!

After the wonderful eclipse picnic evening we’re going to walk a new local route this Sunday. We’ll meet and walk through New River Village to the southern entrance of Alexandra Palace park and on through the park to the bandstand in The Grove.  At The Grove we’ll have coffee and listen to the band Swingbusters who will entertain us with a mix of jazz and swing music. Dancing optional…

At 12.00 we’ll meet at bus stop D on Hornsey High Street near the New River, not far from the railway arch. Coming from Wood Green / Turnpike Lane take the 144 bus to stop J and the meeting place will be on the opposite side of the road. From Muswell Hill / Crouch End stop D is served by the 41/91/144 buses.

We’re trialling a new way to find meeting locations so we are sharing a what3words address to help you find this specific location. Tap to see exactly where it is and it will open on your smartphone in the browser, hope it helps: https://w3w.co/trout.smashes.neck

Tai Chi (beginners, intermediate and returners!), EXTENDED!

Following the popular launch of our Tai Chi sessions, we’re pleased to announce that we are extending the sessions into September. Moving forward, we ask all members to register again and select the dates they plan to attend. This is important so we can plan each session properly and ensure we have the right numbers.

The sessions with instructor Heron are suitable for beginners, intermediate participants and those returning from previous sessions. Tai Chi can help improve balance, flexibility and strength, while supporting wellbeing, reducing stress and promoting relaxation. After the class, why not stay for a coffee or refreshment at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre café/bar?

Make Your Move: BGAC Chess Club (monthly)

Wanna have a go at the board? The Bernie Grant Arts Centre is hosting a monthly Chess Club, welcoming players of all ages and abilities to come along, play a few games, and enjoy a relaxed evening of chess. The club is currently being trialled over the next few months, with hopes to extend it into a regular event. It’s free to attend, so there’s no need to book, just drop in! The next two dates are: 18 August and 19 September from 7pm–10pm.

Relaxed Summer Evening Stroll, through the centre of the Borough!

We are changing things a little on the next evening walk, join in for another relaxed summer stroll, starting on West Green Road before heading into the park for a gentle stroll through the greenery. We’ll take our time, enjoy the fresh air and evening atmosphere, and have plenty of opportunities to pause, chat and take in our surroundings before making our way back to West Green Road, and perhaps for a drink at the local! Whether you fancy a gentle amble, a little more of a purposeful stroll, or simply some company and fresh air at the end of a summer day, everyone is very welcome. Come along, enjoy the evening, and walk at a pace that suits you!

Cinema Club: The Summer Book (2024)

Arthouse have told us they love our members’ visits – so join us next week for The Summer Book (2024), a tender and beautifully observed film about family, grief and the restorative power of nature. Set on a remote island in the Gulf of Finland, it follows a young girl, her wise grandmother (played by the fantastic Glenn Close) and her grieving father through a transformative summer together. Adapted from Tove Jansson’s beloved novel, this is a quiet, heartfelt story of love, loss and the delicate bonds between generations. Come along and join the Cinema Club screening , for just £4!

Cheshunt / Wildlife Centre Walk, a discovery!

At last, by popular demand, join member Jaki for our  Wildlife Discovery Walk through the beautiful Lea Valley Country Park. This time, we’ll be taking a longer route at a slightly brisker pace, giving us the chance to explore even more of the park’s stunning lakes, nature reserves and hidden corners. We’ll meet at the Weaver Line entrance of Seven Sisters station to catch the 11:31 train to Cheshunt before setting off, so come a little earlier. The walk will last approximately two hours before returning by train. If you enjoy fresh air, nature, good company and discovering new parts of the Lee Valley, we’d love you to join us.

Please note: a packed lunch is recommended, with picnic tables and toilet facilities available during the outing.

August Bank Holiday Lunch

As our tradition goes, we’re heading back to The Mossy Well this next Bank Holiday! Join us for lunch, friendly conversation and plenty of laughs as we continue one of our favourite regular get-togethers. Whether you’re catching up with old friends or meeting new ones, everyone is welcome, come along and enjoy the Bank Holiday with great company.

Seaside Escape: Coach Trip to Brighton!

Following a very enjoyable first visit to Margate, we’re excited to announce that our next coach trip will be heading to Brighton! We’re now opening expressions of interest, with full details and confirmations to follow shortly. Priority will be given to members who were waitlisted for the previous trip, but we expect to have plenty of spaces available. Join us for a day out exploring this must-see seaside destination, discovering all that Brighton has to offer, and enjoying a great day together.
