Sunday Nature & Wellness: Walthamstow Wetlands

This Sunday, we’ll be heading back to Walthamstow Wetlands for our regular weekend walk. It’s a lovely chance to get some gentle exercise, enjoy a lovely local space, catch up with familiar faces, and finish with a well-earned drink together.

The forecast is for a warm, partly sunny day with temperatures around 30°C, so please take care in the heat and come prepared for the warm weather. If you come along, remember to bring plenty of water, wear a hat and sunscreen, and dress for the conditions. If it’s a little too hot for you, don’t worry, there will be plenty of future walks to enjoy with us!

Tai Chi (beginners, intermediate and returners!)

After a popular launch of this week, we continue the course with 3 remaining sessions with instructor Heron, suitable for beginners, intermediate participants and returners from the last sessions. Please note that, as this is a progressive course, members are asked to commit to all four weeks to get the most from the sessions, so if you wish to jojn from this point onward you will be expected to attend the remaining sessions.

Tai Chi helps improve balance, flexibility, strength and wellbeing, while reducing stress and promoting relaxation. After class, why not stay for a coffee or refreshment at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre café/bar?

A Picnic in the Path of the Eclipse!

Join us on Wednesday 12th for our inaugural picnic at Alexandra Palace! Just to make it EXTRA SPECIAL we have arranged for a SOLAR ECLIPSE to enthral and entertain our members.

We’ll begin the picnic from 5.30 onwards until about 7pm or so,  in the field beside the Go Ape rope walk (which is behind the lake cafe), and has offered us picnic tables. Bring your own food and refreshments.

By bus you can access Ally Pally by the W3, from Wood Green, alight in front of the Palace and walk back to the lake, alternatively from Muswell Hill/Crouch End take the W3 and alight at the Rose Garden stop just after the Palace. To access the field, walk towards the boating lake – don’t enter – and walk past slightly downhill and in 50 metres the field entrance is on the left. There are picnic tables available. (Alernatively the 184 stops at the Palace Gates Rd side entrance to the Park, where the slightly uphill path takes you directly to Go Ape & the field. Paid parking at the east side of the Palace near theatre)

The eclipse will take place from 6-7.30 PM and it will be a near total experience with 91% of the sun obscured. Obviously we want everyone to be safe, so no looking directly at the sun even in sunglasses unless they are specially designed for eclipse viewing. The eclipse can be viewed by looking at the reflection on a card or paper. Colanders are especially good for this apparently?! Yes, really.

Cinema Club: Hunt For the Wilderpeople (2016)

Join our Cinema Club nect week for just £4 and enjoy discounted tickets to fantastic films all year round! Next week, we’re celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Directed by the great Taika Waititi, this critically acclaimed comedy-drama blends laugh-out-loud humour, heartfelt emotion, and breathtaking New Zealand landscapes into a truly unforgettable adventure. When rebellious teenager Ricky (Julian Dennison) and his grumpy foster uncle Hec (Sam Neill) become the subjects of a nationwide manhunt, the unlikely pair must learn to trust one another while surviving in the wild. Packed with quirky characters, warm wit, and touching moments, this modern classic has become one of Waititi’s most beloved films. This special anniversary screening also honours the life and extraordinary career of the much-loved actor Sam Neill (1947–2026).

Dining Circle: Ratatouille, Modern French Cuisine.

We have a few spots open, so do not hesitate to join us for a relaxed three-course lunch at Ratatouille, a modern and well-recommended French restaurant in Muswell Hill. Whether you’re discovering French cuisine for the first time or revisiting familiar favourites, this is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy delicious food, friendly conversation and great company. The three-course lunch is just £15!

Please register as soon as you can as we will circulate the menu so we can confirm everyone’s order with the restaurant by Monday 10th. Due to this, if you have registered already and to be fair to the restaurant, please note that cancellation incurs cost and must be avoided!

Make Your Move: BGAC Chess Club (monthly)

Wanna have a go at the board? The Bernie Grant Arts Centre is hosting a monthly Chess Club, welcoming players of all ages and abilities to come along, play a few games, and enjoy a relaxed evening of chess. The club is currently being trialled over the next few months, with hopes to extend it into a regular event. It’s free to attend, so there’s no need to book, just drop in! The next two dates are: 18 August and 19 September from 7pm–10pm.

Cheshunt / Wildlife Centre Walk, a discovery!

At last, by popular demand, join member Jaki for our  Wildlife Discovery Walk through the beautiful Lea Valley Country Park. This time, we’ll be taking a longer route at a slightly brisker pace, giving us the chance to explore even more of the park’s stunning lakes, nature reserves and hidden corners. We’ll meet at the Weaver Line entrance of Seven Sisters station to catch the 11:31 train to Cheshunt before setting off, so come a little earlier. The walk will last approximately two hours before returning by train. If you enjoy fresh air, nature, good company and discovering new parts of the Lee Valley, we’d love you to join us.

Please note: a packed lunch is recommended, with picnic tables and toilet facilities available during the outing.

August Bank Holiday Lunch

As our tradition goes, we’re heading back to The Mossy Well this next Bank Holiday! Join us for lunch, friendly conversation and plenty of laughs as we continue one of our favourite regular get-togethers. Whether you’re catching up with old friends or meeting new ones, everyone is welcome, come along and enjoy the Bank Holiday with great company.
