Haringey Circle Weekly Update: New Activities and Events!

Dear Members,

We hope you’re enjoying the summer, there’s still much left of it!

For this week only don’t miss our Summer Daytime Disco, where you can dance the afternoon away in the comfort of Gina’s air-conditioned venue. We’re also introducing our very first Summer Evening Stroll next week, a relaxed walk-through Alexandra Park with the support of the Hornsey Round Table, making the most of the lighter evenings together.

Please remember to register for any activities you’d like to attend. For events with limited capacity, we’ll aim to confirm your place as soon as possible after you sign up. Many of our activities have plenty of room, so even if spaces are unlimited, registering still helps us plan and ensures we know to expect you.

We hope to see you at one (or more!) of our activities soon.

Sunday Nature & Wellness: Trent Park

This weekend Summer is in full swing, but the slightly cooler temperatures forecast for this weekend should make for a particularly comfortable walk. Join us for a friendly stroll through the beautiful woodlands and open spaces of Trent Park, with a choice of two walking paces so everyone can enjoy the route at their own speed. It’s a great chance to get some fresh air, catch up with friends, take in the scenery and (as usual) stop for a coffee along the way. Whether you’re a regular walker or joining us for the first time, we’d love to see you there, register below!

Bounds Green drop-in!

If you live nearby, and you’re looking to escape the heat and meet nearby local members, join us in the shade at our friendly Coffee Morning Drop-In at the Pavilion in Oliver Tambo Park near  Bounds Green. Pop in for a chat, a cuppa, and the chance to catch up with familiar faces or meet someone new, everyone is welcome!

Batik, last session!

After some fantastic gatherings, we are having one last Batik session with Cassandra! The word Batik originates from the Javanese word “tik” which mean to dot. An ancient practice of printing fabric with dyes and a wax resist, stemming from Indonesia, across South East Asia, from which she draws inspiration from. We will create some easy simple designs, following a series of processes to produce some fabric art works to take home. All materials are provided and no experience is necessary, venue accessible.

Alert for Batik Members: please note that the location for this week has changed and next week’s Batik session will take at the Community Hub instead.

Come Lime With Me: Chess + Music + Community Building

“Come Lime With Me: Say It With Your Chess” is the launch of the new chess community in the borough. Whether you’ve never played before or you’ve been playing for years, you’re welcome to join us for an easy-going evening of chess, music, and good company. It’s free to attend, open to all skill levels, and a chance to meet new people while enjoying a few games. Join us on the launch Tuesday, 28 July and be part of the start of something new!

First Summer Evening Stroll, with Hornsey Round Table!

You’ve told us that you’d like to take a safe walk on these summer evenings together in our local parks, and we’ve enlisted the help of the gentlemen of the Hornsey Round Table who will escort us, and make sure we are escorted back to the station and entertained along the way! There are pubs (with toilets) at both ends of the route if you’d like to stay on for a drink, but that’s entirely optional. We’ll aim to have everyone on their way home by 8pm. We’ll stroll along the lower path at a relaxed pace, walking as far as feels comfortable, and if we’re lucky, we may even catch the sunset!

Please note that on this walk, dogs are welcome too!

Cinema Club: The Odyssey (2026)

Join us for next week’s Cinema Club as we head to see Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, one of the most anticipated films of the year! As described by reviews, Nolan brings Homer’s legendary epic to life, following Odysseus on his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Starring Matt Damon alongside an outstanding cast including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, this promises to be an unforgettable big-screen adventure. We’d love for you to come along and enjoy what is already being hailed as one of Nolan’s greatest films.

Please note: The film’s duration is 172 minutes plus advertisements AND contains flashing images that may affect viewers with photosensitive epilepsy.

Tai Chi (beginners, intermediate and returners!)

We’re pleased to launch an additional 4-week Tai Chi course with Heron, suitable for beginners, intermediate participants and returners from the last sessions. Please note that, as this is a progressive course, members are asked to commit to all four weeks to get the most from the sessions.

Tai Chi helps improve balance, flexibility, strength and wellbeing, while reducing stress and promoting relaxation. After class, why not stay for a coffee or refreshment at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre café/bar?

Tea & Talk at Ally Pally: Victorian Fern Fever

Following a fantastic first session, we’re happy to be returning to Alexandra Palace Garden Centre for the second in this series of talks. If you missed the first one, don’t miss this opportunity to join us!

August’s talk, presented by the ever-knowledgeable Ali, is titled “Victorian Fern Fever”: discover the fascinating story behind the Victorian obsession with ferns, from their popularity in homes and gardens to the wider cultural craze they inspired. Whether you’re a keen gardener or simply curious about local history and nature, this promises to be an engaging and informative afternoon. Plus, there’ll be complimentary tea and coffee and discounts on plants. Our visit last month was so successful that they wrote an article about it in their newsletter! Our thanks to Capital Gardens for their hospitality: https://www.capitalgardens.co.uk/blog/category/popular-posts/

Please note that for this event registration and confirmation from Haringey Circle are mandatory, you can register here: Houseplant Care and Tea at the Alexandra Palace Garden Centre: Victorian Fern Fever – Fill in form
